Rum is a distilled alcoholic spirit made from sugarcane products such as molasses or fresh sugarcane juice. The fermented liquid is distilled to create a clear spirit. Many rums are then aged in wooden barrels to develop colour and flavour. Rum first developed in the Caribbean during the 17th century, where sugar plantations produced large quantities of molasses as a by-product of sugar production. Plantation workers discovered that molasses could be fermented and distilled into alcohol. The spirit quickly spread through the Caribbean and the Americas and became closely linked with naval trade, sailors, and maritime history.
