What is Gin?
Gin is a distilled spirit defined in UK and retained EU regulations. It must be produced from agricultural alcohol and flavoured with natural botanicals, with juniper as the dominant taste. The spirit must be bottled at a minimum strength of 37.5% alcohol by volume. Several recognised categories exist, including distilled gin and London Dry Gin, which follow strict production rules. The drink traces its origins to the Dutch spirit genever, produced in the Netherlands in the 17th century. Gin became widely popular in Britain during the late 1600s after William of Orange took the English throne and encouraged domestic spirit production.
